Working With the Japanese Labour Force

In recent years, the Japanese government has been encouraging its citizens to take employment abroad through various measures. The most prominent one of these measures is the so-called JET Programme. The JET programme stands for “Japan Exchange and Transport programme”, and this was established in 2021 with the express purpose of helping businesses in Japan to expand and develop. In fact, JET offers foreign employees almost all the same benefits as their home country’s employees receive. For instance, they may enjoy medical cover, paid holidays and a generous safety net of workers’ compensation in case of any accidents or injuries on the job. This is in addition to the other regular benefits that every employee in a typical employer may receive. And JET even arranges for your family members to join you in your new venture should you become sick or become unemployed. This can be quite an attractive proposition for those who believe that they cannot find the time or energy to nurture their families in their home country.

In order to access JET, however, you need to have a Japanese work permit. This is an important requirement because without it your passport will not be valid in Japan and you will not be eligible to work in the country. Your work permit will allow you to enter Japan and stay for a period stipulated in the document, usually one year. It will also allow you to leave the country for any period stipulated in the document if you wish.

It is necessary, however, that you keep your original work permit for a year from the date of issue, otherwise you face a heavy fine. If you do not have an original permit, it is difficult to obtain a refund or resubmission. Another reason why it is important to keep your original permit is that labour contracts in Japan are different to those of other countries. They are typically much more complicated and end with specific procedures. To ensure that your contract is correctly completed and honored, it is important that you retain your permit and original documents. In the case of the labour export industry, this is especially important.
